Lemmings for DOS doesn’t support the sound card in my Gateway so all I can get are beeps from the internal speaker instead of the awesome soundtrack.

Still waiting on new custom board 5700XTs before the new build. Photo editing/gaming rig. Although I need to find a monitor good for both that isn’t hella expensive.

What do you think of having an m.2 SSD as a boot drive? I’m looking for very quick load times from boot, followed by loading  an application that runs on startup and immediately loads ~ 30GB of data in to RAM?

I just ordered a new laptop? Does that count as a project?

What do you even do with all the PCs you build anyways? How many people are clamoring to buy a machine with 2008 's peak gaming performance?

It’s got an Ensoniq AudioPCI card, not all that surprised it doesn’t like it (it’s a windows 95 machine, but that is still over DOS so I had so me hope; to be fair it runs and plays fine, just no music).

Im still looking into building a new PC. Maybe an AMD build with a Ryzen 5 2600X. The 3600x is a bit more expensive but newer and 16% better compared on userbenchmark.com

About 1k and some gaming like American Truck sim, Sim city 4, possibly the new flight simulator. Video editing.

All I need a new CPU, motherboard (asus), graphics, ram, and maybe a cpu cooler, but my Zalman CNPS99 00 does great.

Ive had a m.2 boot drive for the last year. 970 evo 500gb. It’s in a b450 MSI board and once post is over, it’s instant to the desktop. No longer do we have time to go take a pee between on and ready.

Make sure you get the right one for your m.2 slot. Some slots are only for SATA3, others handle NVME and pipe right into the PCIe lanes, and that’s the super fast one you want for the boot drive.

I just bought a 21:9 35" and the market for that size is a bit odd. I was 16:9 24 inch, and had 3 of them for iracing/rfactor but stopped gaming that big once kids became interactive. Sold it all for a 29" 21:9.

Using that one, it’s actually shorter in height than a 24" by just a bit. The trick here is to get a 21:9 for the landscape and desktop room to multi-task, but also have it big enough you aren’t squinting to mkae out small stuff. IF you go over 29" for that aspect ratio I highly recommend 1440 otherwise things start to get kind of grainy and if your doing photo work, then you know what that’s like.

For gaming, My 1080 29" was a flat screen. Ge tting anything in the larger 34" sizes in 1440p outs my gtx 1070 at it’s limit for any more recent games where before at 1080 it was just fine. a 5700xt and a freesync 1440p 21:9 will be wonderful for a gamer. But if that’s not your biz, getting a large 21:9 that has a good display may be tough to find unless its a curved gaming screen. They also command a premium price, as 21:9 isn’t as popular so a 34" 100hz+ will set you back $600 or so.

but, I am not going back now after using the 21:9. I can work on three full sized pages in Word at a time, which is awesome for drafts, editing, cutting and pasting, etc. Or two square google windows and watch youtube while working on something else. Very useful they are!

I like the stealth build. I built mine last year out of the crystal 280x case and tasteful led fans. I’m not looking at a rgb flex piece but tasteful interactive things for the office instead. I do have a beige/white case with 92mm side and top fan holes to eventually use in the garage. It’s all steel and has a removable mobo tray...something i wish they still made.

It’s a 6-8 year old consumer-grade HP. AMD processor, I think. 32GB ram. It survived an electrical strike mostly unscathed, and has been reliable over the years. When I retire it, I will either move my main work PC (Dell XPS 8900) up to replace it, buy a many core Xeon workstation, or build something from scratch.  Video performance is almost irrelevant.  This software likes multiple core processors, fast HDD, and mucho RAM.  Whatever the new machine is, it needs to have 64GB RAM minimum.

Most wouldn’t even realize the gains between the two standards.  I haven’t been keeping up, but have PCIe SSDs fizzled out?  Seems like it’s m.2 right on the motherboard these days.

But why a floppy drive? You’ll never use it. You wouldn’t even use an old zip drive, the storage density is just too low to be practical today.

If I did this all over again I’d probably use a Lian-Li 011 case, or nzxt’s h400. But, if I had an extra $300 just for a case, My future office spaace needs would be met perfectly with Lian Li’s wall hanging case the O-7. several sizes exist, takes forever to put together and is all metal. I wouldn’t be that flashy with it though.

Curr ently as sits. MSI b450m titanium, 16g team dark samsung-b 3200. h115i cooling. 1500x runs all core at 4ghz, It was a placeholder until 7nm ryzen came out and as I promised myself, I just bought a 3700x and the world will be right. I could even do a 3900x on this board but I won’t need 12 cores for a long long time. Ill get it for when I do. Games of the future will use 8 as the consoles will have 8, so I’m happy.

I had to do some slight case adjustments so it could breathe. I got some black plastic spacers at ACE to raise the top glass up a half inch. As well as found some patio chair leg end caps that were clear and fit perfect on the bottom feet of the case raising it up also a third of an inch. So it can breathe in and out easier.....cooler. Worked well.

not yet. glass is no problem at all. it doesn’t come off but to clean. Just as durable as any stereo cabinet. bios update  coming next week when the chip arrives and i’m off work so i can spend a day in case something isnt right. First rig i built was a 486 slc2/66 in college. then bought a notebook years later and didnt build again till the athlon 2500+ days where mine eventually ran 2.6ghz under homebrew water. It’s kind of amazing how much well spend just to play a game better. Opteron 165 after that. x4 965 after that...now this

It’s a Gateway box, Pentium 2, runs Windows 95 (B). The Quantum Fireball HDD failed so I put in an IDE/CF adapter, it has a CD drive, 3.5" floppy, 5.25" floppy, USB support I actually got to work with a flash drive, and a ZIP100 drive via parallel. Sound card is the previously mentioned Ensoniq AudioPCI, with video from a Riva 128. It’s a nice system.

I do have a free ISA slot (there are two, one houses a 56k modem at the moment), hadn’t considered that route . I’m almost afraid to look what an appropriate- for- DOS soundblaster card costs anymore.
